Dr. Andrew Waterson

Andrew is a registered psychologist based in Melbourne, Australia who specialises in high-prevalence mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. He has particular focus on how these conditions affect high-performance athletes, and has a special interest and experience in working with clients suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Starting out as a youth drug and alcohol psychologist in Dandenong, Victoria back in 2008, Andrew then moved into providing psychology services in the tertiary education system. Andrew completed his Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Psychology in 2014, focusing on working with golfers, and has worked in the elite and professional performance sector since.

Andrew’s experience as a psychologist encompasses clients from a wide variety of cultures, backgrounds, and all walks of life. His knowledge and experience in performance psychology took him to New Zealand to work with the National Rowing program, Canoe Racing program and the Snow Sports New Zealand program: out of all the offices he’s worked in, the ski lifts in Wanaka are still his all-time favourite spot.

In 2018, Andrew moved home to work with the Melbourne Football Club where he spent four seasons and helped support the team to achieve the ultimate goal of winning the AFL Premiership in 2021. Taking on an exciting new challenge, Andrew now works at Hawthorn Football Club as their Club Psychologist.

To Andrew, welfare and performance come hand-in-hand: when you know what is important to you, and you have good people around you, you can build the capacity to live with courage and commitment, and perform at your best.

A Seinfeld nerd who’s obsessed with sport, Andrew’s free time is split between surfing and the golf course.
